Tom Gleave's 1986 Monte Carlo SS
This 1986 Monte Carlo SS belongs to Tom Gleave of the New York Monte Carlo
Club. Tom's car has been extensively modified inside and out.
Under the hood you will find a powerplant built by Joey Speed Race Engines of
Center Morichies in Long Island, New York, The 350ci smallblock has been
punched .030 over to accommodate the J&E 11:1 forged dome pistons. The 4
bolt main block also houses an Eagle forged crank spinning Eagle 6" HP forged
rods. Covering the bottom end is a Hamburger 8qt oil pan. The top
end of the engine sports a set of Edelbrock aluminum 64cc Performer RPM heads.
Nestled inside the heads are Lunati solid lifters, 1.5 roller rockers, and solid
pushrods that are bumped in sequence by a Lunati solid mechanical cam with
546/561 lift and 288/298 duration. An Action plus single plane intake
manifold and Holley 750cfm carb button up the top end of this potent powerplant.
Electrical impulses are handled by a MSD 6al and retard box, Pro Billet
distributor and 8.8mm wires. Cooling effects are provided by an Edelbrock
aluminum waterpump, March underdrive pulleys and a Be Cool Aluminum radiator
with dual electric 11" fans. Hooker 1 7/8 SC Headers route the exhaust
gasses through the Flowmaster Super 40's and 3" exhaust pipes. And for
those times when an extra amount of boost is needed, Tom just releases some N2O
from the NX Nitrous setup he installed.
To transfer the power from the mouse nestled in it's nest, Tom installed a FB
Performance 700R4 transmission built to handle 750hp. A Pro Torq 3500
stall non/lockup converter and B&M Megashifter round out the shifting duties.
On the recieving end of the driveshaft is a 12 bolt Strange Pro Race 33
spline Ford 9" rearend. Richmond 456 gears are housed inside the pumpkin.
Strange adjustable coil over shocks, LWP aluminum cover support and fully welded
and braced tubes assist the Metco upper and lower control arms. Wilwood
disc brakes help in the halting duties and a Metco drive shaft loop ensures the
shaft stays in place in case of premature failure during a high speed pass.
Cosmetically, Tom didn't neglect his Monte either. The color sprayed on
this Monte is Nighthawk Black Violet Pearl. The body was kept mostly stock
with the exception of a Goodmark 2" Cowl Hood. The car rides on Weld Wheel
Draglites both on and off the track. For street duty, the wheels are
wrapped with BF Goodrich Comp T/A 295/50/15's up front and 225/60/15's out back.
For strip duty, the same style wheels are covered with 15x8w/28x11.5x15 MT et
streets in back and 15x6 w/26x7.5x15 MT Frontrunners up front. A
Competition Engineering 8 point rollcage was installed for the driver safety
factor.
Tom's 86 SS isn't all show and no go. A best
10.94 @ 126.38 mph 1/4 mile pass attests to
this Monte's capability to back up it's good looks with brute horsepower.
Great car Tom!
